Washi Festival 2017 - unofficial ceremonies
The Washi Festival is not only the official ceremony held at the temple, but also several other accompanying events.
One of them is a 3-day fair of papers manufactured in this region. The makers of washi present their products; one can talk to them and of course buy excellent papers. The choice is not an easy one, however, because the array of patterns, structures and colours is really stunning. It is a real paradise for fans of hand-made items and design.
The Washi Festival is also an excellent opportunity to meet and celebrate, therefore its important element is the possibility to try the local food. The most famous dish for the region is the soba pasta, which is made right before serving. You can actually watch the process of preparing the dough and how it is cut.
During these three days, there are also the art workshops for the children, as well as the song and dance shows. You can also try your skills in calligraphy.
The Paper Festival is a truly magical event, which merges the official, elevated ceremonies with common entertainment. It offers the possibility to enjoy some earthly pleasures, but at the same time to feel the atmosphere of a 1500-year-old tradition in the legendary place, where washi was born.
Event: Washi Festival.
Time: May 3-5, each year.
Location: the papermaking street (Washi-no-sato Street), Echizen, Fukui prefecture.
